New Numbers Show Continuing Rapid Solar Expansion
3 August 2018
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Green Mountain Power is seeing a rapid rise of solar energy capacity in Vermont (see chart) from less than 10,000 kilowatts installed in 2010 to more than 150,000 kilowatts installed through July 2018, enough to power about 30,000 homes. The amount of growth in 2018 has far exceeded expectations for solar development. The numbers reflect active net metering projects in GMP territory and represent about 65 percent of all the solar development in GMP’s coverage area.
“Our latest numbers show extraordinary continued growth and the interest our customers have in energy independence and transformation,” said Josh Castonguay, GMP Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer. “This really drives home the importance of our ongoing work to use innovative, cost-effective solutions to transform the grid to home, business, and community based independent systems that use the latest innovations like battery storage and controllable devices to drive down costs for the customers we serve.”
GMP tracks solar installations because net metering customers connect to GMP’s grid network to benefit from Vermont’s net metering program which currently pays higher-than-market-prices for the solar energy customers produce.
