2021 Zetterstrom Award

Know an environmental hero? Nominate them!

Vermont is filled with people and organizations working to protect and improve our environment. We share that passion – so we present the annual GMP-Zetterstrom Environmental Award to recognize others who epitomize the dedication and perseverance exhibited by Meeri Zetterstrom to better Vermont’s natural resources. The award was created in 2010 to honor Meeri’s legacy and recognize other Vermonters and Vermont organizations working to protect and enhance our environment.

Meeri was a tough, single-minded woman who spent 16 to 18 hours a day studying ospreys and advocating on their behalf. The namesake award includes a $2,500 donation to further the winner’s cause, and stands as one of Vermont’s most respected and sought-after acknowledgments for environmentalism.

Past winners have included the Lake Champlain Committee, Sally Laughlin, a leading wildlife advocate and scientist, whose work was instrumental in restoring three species of endangered birds in Vermont, and Michael Smith, who turned an abandoned, overgrown forest into an environmental oasis with miles of trails in the city of Rutland.
