Report Focuses on Strengthening the Greater Grid to Boost Resiliency, Affordability and Enable More Local Renewables
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Green Mountain Power (GMP) filed its 2021 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with the Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC) this afternoon, a report that is updated every three years. The IRP is a roadmap as GMP continues its work to strengthen the greater grid to increase resiliency for Vermont communities, while driving down costs and enabling more cost-effective local renewable power.
“This plan shows our ongoing commitment to customers to best serve them cost effectively, reliably, safely, and equitably,” said Mari McClure, GMP’s president and CEO. “Our programs empower customers, cut carbon and costs for all, and help ensure everyone is part of this transformation. The greater grid is the backbone that we are strengthening to enable a rapid shift away from fossil fuel to fight climate change, while also connecting new technologies for greater energy independence.”
Leveraging innovation to empower customers and communities through this greater grid also drives down costs for all customers. GMP’s energy storage network provides added backup power for residents, businesses, and communities and in 2020 alone, reduced more than $3 million in costs for all GMP customers.
“We are creating a closer and connected greater grid with two-way energy sharing and more renewable power generated closer to where we all use it, to power our homes, keep our buildings warm, and provide electricity for our vehicles,” McClure said.
GMP analyzed data about system performance, customer programs, and power supply options in drafting the plan, and gained input from customers in a series of public meetings. Prior to finalizing the plan, GMP shared analysis with the Department of Public Service for feedback, as required. The IRP will now be reviewed by the PUC in a proceeding that will include public hearings and opportunity for input. The plan will be available to read on GMP’s website.
