GMP Certified as B Corp for Third Time, Using Energy as a Force for Good
GMP Remains First and Only Electric Utility to Meet B Corp’s Strict Environmental, Social and Transparency Standards
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Green Mountain Power (GMP) announced it has earned recertification as a B Corp after a thorough review by B Lab to meet rigorous environmental, social and transparency standards while using business as a force for good. GMP was the first utility to earn B Corp certification in 2014, was recertified in 2017, and with this new recertification, it again joins B Corps businesses in Vermont and across the country who have committed to socially responsible business practices, including Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s.
“GMP’s work with customers is continuing to lead the way in their industry. We’re thrilled GMP is once again recertified as a B Corporation, meeting the highest standards for social and environmental accountability and purpose in serving Vermonters,” said Becca Quirk, community engagement manager at B Lab U.S. & Canada. “B Corp certification signals to customers that a company no matter the industry operates in a way that supports healthy, equitable communities, and empowers people to help make positive change.”
Being socially responsible is in the DNA of many Vermont businesses, and the Green Mountain State is one of the top 10 in the country for B Corps per capita. There are a growing number of Vermont-based B Corps. As of 2021, there are 39 B Corps in Vermont, up from 21 when GMP was first certified in 2014 King Arthur Baking Company was a pioneer in this sustainable business model, first earning a B Corp certification in 2007. The company has worked with GMP to cut carbon and costs in its bakery operations, switching from fossil fuel to electric ovens in 2019.
“The B Corp community is strong in Vermont, and we seek opportunities to come together to use our collective businesses as a force for social and environmental good,” said Carey Underwood, director of mission partnerships at King Arthur Baking Company. “We’re here to make a difference and have a positive impact on people and the planet, making sure we leave the world better than we found it.”
B Corp noted GMP’s commitment to customers and clean energy – GMP’s energy supply is 100% carbon free and 68% renewable and will be 100% renewable by 2030. GMP is the only electric utility to earn B Corp Certification.
“Never before has the team at GMP been more motivated to serve Vermonters – our customers – with a much more resilient and equitable energy delivery system, enabling decarbonization in all aspects of their lives,” said Mari McClure, GMP’s president and CEO. “We’re so proud to work alongside the many other certified B Corps in Vermont who are industry leaders that inspire us to keep working together to make our state stronger.”
