Common Terms on Your Energy Statement
Current Energy/Major Storm Adjuster
This line item can fluctuate depending on the real costs of energy supply and unplanned storm damage. If real costs are less than what is in the approved budget, this is a credit. And, if real costs exceed what was budgeted, it is charge. This line item is used to transparently ‘true up’ actual savings and costs for customers, and regulators review and approve changes to it.
Customer Charge
This is a fixed per day charge approved by regulators to cover a portion of the cost of system upkeep and making power service available to every GMP customer including maintaining wires, poles, and meters. This is separate from your energy usage.
Demand
The amount of electrical load required by equipment actually taking service in any 15-minute demand interval, and is always less than or equal to the connected load of equipment at the location. Demand is measured in kilowatts (KW).
Energy Assistance Program (EAP)
This is a monthly charge to fund a discount program for residential customers who are Low Income. It is administered by the State of Vermont Agency of Human Services Department for Children and Families for customers with a household gross income of 185% of the poverty level or less. The current residential EAP charge is $1.50 per meter per month. For more information on the EAP, visit Energy Assistance Program.
Energy Efficiency Charge
This fee is required by the Legislature to fund the statewide energy efficiency utility Efficiency Vermont. The rate is set by regulators at the Vermont Public Utility Commission, and what you are charged is based on your electric usage. All funds collected through this line item go to Efficiency Vermont.
Extreme Storm Restoration Fund
This is to pay for extreme weather events that hit, and it helps offset costs associated with future large storm events. GMP reports quarterly on the balance to regulators and any proposed uses of the fund to mitigate the impact of major storms.
Kilowatt (KW)
The rate at which electricity is used; a kilowatt is 1,000 watts. The basic unit of demand.
Kilowatt Hour (kWh)
A Kilowatt Hour = 1,000 watt hours. The basic unit of electric energy equal to one kilowatt of power used for one hour. The amount of electricity sold or consumed is measured in kilowatt-hours.
Late Payment Charge
This charge applies only to commercial and industrial customers. An interest charge of 1% is assessed on any “Past Due” amount appearing on the bill. To avoid this charge, payment must be made by the date shown on the front of the bill.
Non Bypassable Charges
These are the individual line-item charges for all GMP customers (for example, Customer charge, Energy Efficiency) that are separate from your energy usage. These charges cannot be bypassed by net metering customers, meaning that net metering credits cannot be used to pay these items. Regulators approve these charges and set their rules. Using net meter credits to pay a non bypassable charge is considered a double subsidy that would unfairly disadvantage all other GMP customers who have already paid net metering customers an above-market price for their solar energy.
Peak/Off Peak
For rates indicated, kWh and kW charges vary based on the time of day that energy is used. Customers save when they use electricity during off-peak periods and pay more for electricity used during peak demand periods. This is also known as time of-use (TOU) rate. Refer to your specific rate to find your off-peak times to help you save.
Residential Net Metering
Although the examples of Residential Net Metering refer to solar panels, your own net metered generation may be from another source such as residential wind or mini hydro.
Total kWh Consumed
Refers to the kilowatt hours you purchased from GMP during the billing period.
Total kWh Generated
Refers to the kilowatt hours you sent to GMP because they were not used in your home.
Total kWh Net Billed
Refers to the amount of kilowatt hours GMP is billing you this month because you purchased more power from GMP than you sent to GMP.
Total kWh Excess Credit
Refers to the amount of kilowatt hours GMP is crediting you this month because you sent GMP more kilowatt hours than you used from GMP.
Transfer Credit To/From Net Meter Bank
This adjustment will display the monetized amount of net metering credits transferred to and from your net metering bank; from your net meter bank to pay applicable charges and to your net meter bank when you generate excess credits to be used within 12 months. These are shown as positive amounts (debit) on your bill but they are actually credits being moved to your bank.
Vermont Sales Tax
Residential customers do not pay sales tax on energy usage, but other components of the bill are subject to the sales tax. Non-residential customers pay sales tax on the entire bill unless you receive an exemption from the State of Vermont.
